On Friday, 10 November, over 150 people gathered from across Hawke’s Bay to attend the inaugural 2022 Hawke’s Bay Heritage Awards.
The Napier War Memorial Centre provided the venue for this very special occasion, where awards were given in eight categories, and a Supreme Winner.
Hawke’s Bay Heritage Awards 2024 Supreme Winner:
Te Kura i Awarua Rangahau Māori Centre, EIT
This team has been involved in a number of ‘heritage projects’ including the Henare Matua collection of Repudeation Movement letters of the 1870s, the JT Blake manuscripts of the 1880-90s and the raising of two Heritage Symposiums bringing archivists and curators nationally to Hawke’s Bay.
The team have also been involved in the Te Po-ho o-Kahungunu carvings repatriation, bringing them to Hastings for the 2023 Symposium.

Highly commended: Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Wānanga Whare Tapere o Takitimu
Seismic Strengthening Award:
Winner: 101 Queens Street East (former) Post Office, Hastings
Future Heritage Award:
Winner: Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Wānanga Whare Tapere o Takitimu
Highly commended: Ngāti Kahungunu Repatriation project, (accepted by Donald Tipene-Matua)
Hawke’s Bay Heritage Hero Award:
